Our gal Laura McDougall, also known as LJ, joined the H&V team in September 2017, creating some outstanding hair transformations and simply stunning hair styling. We sat down with her and asked her a few questions….

How did you get into hairdressing?

In my late teens, I realised I had a more creative flare rather than academic. I started to be interested in hair early on and hairdressing allowed me to be more creative.

What was it about Honey and Violet that inspired you to work here?

I had followed Honey and violet on social media for a while and really liked their style especially their styling and bridal work. After being in the salon for my initial discussion, they seemed like a close-knit team and would offer plenty of training opportunities to help me develop as a hairdresser/colourist.

What’s your top hair care tip you tell your clients?

For blondes, I would advise using a high-quality silver shampoo and a good hair treatment at least once a week for coloured hair.

What is the most common colouring mistake you come across?

That’s easy! Hair stylists using permanent tint – it’s not necessary!

How often should you really get your hair cut?

To keep your hair healthy, you should get you hair cut every 6 – 8 weeks. However, I would suggest every 8-12 weeks if you are growing your hair.

As a hairdresser /colourist, where do you get most of your inspiration from?

I follow many high profile, experienced hairdressers/colourists on social media. I also receive inspiration after attending training courses.

What is your favourite part about hairdressing?

I love complete hair transformations and seeing client’s reactions; making them feel good about themselves. My favourite hair colouring technique is balayage. Balayage is a freehand hair colouring technique that gives a really blended natural look; perfect to avoid harsh contrast between colours – especially if you’re going lighter.
